About Yoga & Mindfulness.

What is yoga?

Yoga as a movement practise is focused on strength, mobility and breathwork to enhance you overall mental and physical wellbeing. Yoga's origins lie in India, many hundreds of years ago. The forms of yoga that we know today are a continual evolution from these orgins.

‘Yoga’ in the Western world tends to focus mostly on the physical asana practice – the yoga poses. This is a great start but there is so much more to explore as you develop your own yoga practice.

My approach although rooted in this ancient tradition, is also based upon up-to-date scientific research and is accessible and welcoming to all practitioners!

What is mindfulness?

Mindfulness is the simple ability to be fully present in the current moment. It is becoming aware of where we are and what we’re doing, without being responsive or overwhelmed by our environment. Mindfulness is something that everyone already possesses the ability to do. You don't have to magically know anything special to be mindful, you just have to learn how to access it.

Mindfulness has been scientifically indicated to reduce stress, enhance performance and increase our attention to others’ well-being. When we are able to be in a mindful state we can gain insight and awareness just through observing ourselves, in a gentle, accepting and non-judgemental manner.

I often incorporate mindfulness practices into my classes, as well as in my 1:1 coaching offerings. It involves taking the time to pay attention to where we are and what’s going on around us. This act starts with being aware of our body.

Both science and experience demonstrate the array of positive benefits mindfulness offers for both our professional and personal lives.

What is AcroYoga?

AcroYoga is a physical movement practice which draws on practices from acrobatics, yoga and therapeutics. AcroYoga is scalable to all abilites, so get involved even if you've never tried it before!

AcroYoga is rooted in building effective communication skills, solid teamwork skills and building trust within your AcroYoga partnership.

How is yoga different from stretching, or other kinds of fitness?

Unlike stretching or other fitness training, yoga is more than just a physical workout.

During the physical yoga practice we couple our body movements with the rhythm of our breath. This can aid us in focusing and relaxing the mind. Yoga practice can improve the body's strength, flexibility and balance, whilst also calming the mind, improving posture and aiding digestion.

What if I'm not very flexible or fit? Can I still do yoga?

Yes! In fact you are a perfect candidate for yoga.

Many people think that they need to be flexible or super fit to begin yoga, but that’s a little bit like thinking that you need to be able to play the piano in order to take piano lessons.

Come as you are and you will find that yoga practice will help you to improve your physical fitness levels, as well as your flexibility.

I've never done yoga before – where should I start?

Beginners’ courses and classes! Even if you consider yourself super fit and sporty I'd still recommend attending a few beginners classes first. These will help you to get a better sense of what yoga is, some of the most common poses and how you can practice yoga safely.

Alternatively, a few 1:1 coaching sessions may be perfect for you to get to know yoga in your body and how you can start to build your own personal yoga practise.

Drop me a message if you're unsure of which classes would be best for you, or if you would like to explore 1:1 coaching with me!

I already practice yoga, do you offer intermediate and advanced level teaching?

Yes, absolutely! I offer intermediate classes online, as well as in-person classes in Zürich.

I also run specialist workshops and events where we dive deeper into specific skills or poses, such as inversions, arm balances and back bends.

Coming to class.

What do I bring to a yoga class?

Just bring yourself in comfortable clothing, any equipment you'd like to use in class and a small bottle of water if you wish.

Due to the current COVID restrictions I would recommend using your own mat, however, if you do not have one please contact me and we can arrange for one to be provided for you. All equipment is available at the Younion Yoga studio should you wish borrow anthing.

All provided props and mats are sanitised between classes.

What should I wear?

It’s important to feel comfortable and have the freedom to move freely when practicing yoga.

Shorts or leggings with a comfortable sports top is usually what most people prefer to wear - feel free to come as you wish!

What if I have an injury or condition that might affect my ability to participate?

While yoga has been shown to benefit many different conditions, please do let me know if you have a condition or injury you that might need to work around during class.

There are a variety of different classes which suit individual health needs and that can be adapted and modified. However, if you have a medical condition or injury and you haven’t practiced yoga before, I'd recommend talking to a doctor/health professional prior to class.

As with all physical exercise, if at any time something doesn’t feel right for you, move as you wish and participate however feels best for you. Feel free to take a break at any time during classes by sitting or lying quietly on your mat.

Can I do yoga while I am pregnant?

If you are pregnant please check with your doctor or health professional before starting yoga.

If you’ve never done yoga before, it’s usually recommended not to start during the first trimester of pregnancy as your body may not be used to it. However, if you already regularly practice yoga you can continue to practice. There may be some poses that you choose to modify or avoid.

If you are happy to share, please let me know if you are pregnant so that I can support you as best I can throughout our time together.

If there is anything else that you would like to know, please do not hesitate to get in touch!
