The Glorification of Busy.
As yoga teachers, we often see students coming to class exhausted from the demands of their busy lives. The culture of busyness has become so prevalent in our society that it's almost seen as a badge of honour to be constantly on the go, to have a packed schedule, and to be juggling multiple responsibilities. But this constant state of busyness can take a toll on our physical and mental well-being, and it's important to remember that true success and fulfilment come from living a balanced and mindful life.
How on earth did we get here? Modern society has been characterized by a culture of "busyness" where people are constantly striving to do more, be more productive and achieve more success. But what led to this glorification of busy and why is it so widespread today?
The rise of the industrial revolution in the 18th and 19th centuries saw a significant shift in the way people worked. With the introduction of factories, mass production and the division of labor, people were expected to work long hours and be productive in order to meet the demands of the growing economy. This fast-paced and demanding lifestyle soon became the norm and was seen as a measure of success.
In the 20th century, technological advancements further accelerated the pace of life. The invention of computers, smartphones and the internet has made it possible for people to work and communicate from anywhere, anytime. This has resulted in an increase in work-life blur and the expectation that people should be constantly connected and available.
Today, the glorification of busy has reached new heights with people using their busy schedules as a status symbol. It's not uncommon to hear people boast about how little sleep they are getting, how many tasks they have to complete in a day and how they have no time for anything else. This has created a culture where being busy has become a badge of honor, a sign of success and a symbol of importance.
However, this relentless pursuit of busyness has its consequences. Busy schedules can lead to increased stress, burnout and a lack of work-life balance. Moreover, it can also lead to neglecting one's health and wellness, including physical and mental health.
As a workplace wellness consultant and yoga coach, I believe it's so important to raise awareness about the dangers of the glorification of busyness and help people find a healthy balance between work and life. By promoting practices such as mindfulness, yoga, and regular breaks, I hope to empower people to prioritize their well-being and create a healthier, happier and more sustainable work environment.
The glorification of busy has a long history and is deeply rooted in our society. However, it's time to recognize its negative impact and make changes towards a more mindful and balanced way of life. By prioritizing wellness in the workplace, we can create a healthier and happier future for all.
